NRT trainees, Kristiina Ala-Kokko, Bailey Peterson-Wilhelm, Jeffery Reed, and Raymond Thomas, conducted two workshop sessions "What is the true cost of water? Teaching Opportunity Cost" on Friday, January 20, 10:30am and 11:30am, at the Kansas Association of Agricultural Educators (KAAE) Symposium.Workshop kits were given to workshop attendees. The goal of the workshop is to prompt students to think about the value of natural resources today and in the future when making decisions. Factoring in opportunity costs leads to more informed production decisions. The workshop starts by encouraging students to think about tradeoffs made in everyday life and then connecting that idea to agricultural production. A brief lesson on opportunity cost and the Ogallala aquifer gives students important background information. Finally, students engage in an interactive classroom activity to pull the concepts together. Workshop resources can be found at the QR code.
